Irene comes from a family of educators, one that includes several professors, high school teachers, and even a literal test writer for ACT! That made it only natural for her to segue into tutoring after graduating from Princeton University right in the middle of the pandemic. She’s been happily tutoring since, first entirely remotely for international students looking to get into selective American colleges, then as an in-person tutor around Washington, D.C., and now here in Los Angeles.
Across her five years tutoring, by far the most important thing she’s found is to give students reasons to care about the material. Her teaching style thus weaves together applications of the material in future, often college-level, courses, as well as, anecdotes about the often-hilarious characters who first formulated it: for example, how Johannes Kepler used to earnestly believe he was a dog. With experience having tutored classes of all different levels, Irene also takes care to reroute in the moment to make sure that each concept is completely solid; there’s no use building on shaky foundations from previous years. This sort of interdisciplinary flexibility and in-the-moment Socratic style should get students accustomed to the style of college and beyond – and hopefully be enjoyable at the time!
- Took 15 AP Exams, and scored a 5 on each one
- Received B.A. from Princeton University, with certificates in Sustainable Energy & History and the Practice of Diplomacy
- Wrote a screenplay adaptation of Paradise Lost
- As is probably apparent, Irene’s trans – and that’s led to lots and lots of funny stories! (She/her pronouns are nice, but any will work)
- Irene’s lived in six different foreign countries (3 of them before age 10)!
